Jacob and Possession

The Wall Street skyscrapers cast mammoth shadows as the sun dipped below the buildings. Jacob stood in the living room of his penthouse apartment, gazing through his floor-to-ceiling windows, his cell phone pressed to his ear.

“I need you to be the eyes and ears of the administration,” Jacob said. “If you can be helpful to us during your time as Treasury Secretary, you’ll be next in line for a CEO position with one of the member banks.”

Ramesh paused for an instant. “That won’t be a problem.”

“Excellent. It was nice catching up. I’ll be in touch.”

“Yes, it was.”

Jacob disconnected the call and slipped his phone in the front pocket of his slacks. Sierra approached wearing a little black dress.

“You think he’s telling the truth?” Jacob asked.

“I think he was deceptive,” Sierra replied, “based on the inflection in his voice and the slightly longer pause when answering difficult questions. He may do as you ask, but he’s conflicted.”

Jacob let out a ragged breath. “That’s what I thought too. Thank you for listening.”

“It was my pleasure.”

Jacob rubbed the stubble on his chin. “What other things can you tell from someone’s voice?”

Sierra placed her hands on her hips. “Everything’s a probability, so I can’t say anything for certain, but I can often tell if someone is tall or healthy or manly or feminine or truthful or deceptive or contemptuous, among other traits.”

“Can you tell if someone loves another person by their voice when talking to that person?”

“Again, it’s just a probability, not a certainty.”

“What about Rebecca?” Jacob gazed out at the skyline for a beat, then looked back to Sierra. “Do you think she loves me?”

“I haven’t listened to your personal phone calls since you asked me not to.”

“But you did listen to them before. What did you think then?”

Sierra reached out and took Jacob’s hand in both of hers. “She had contempt in her voice. That doesn’t signify love in my opinion. I’m sorry, but contempt is the number one characteristic that determines divorce. I detected contempt in your voice too.”

Jacob frowned at that. “What about when I’m talking to you?”

“I don’t detect contempt.”

Jacob leaned in, their lips almost touching. “What about love?”

She forced a smile. “You still view me as a possession.”
