Jacob and Possession
The Wall Street skyscrapers cast mammoth shadows as the sun dipped below the buildings. Jacob stood in the living room of his penthouse apartment, gazing through his floor-to-ceiling windows, his cell phone pressed to his ear.
âI need you to be the eyes and ears of the administration,â Jacob said. âIf you can be helpful to us during your time as Treasury Secretary, youâll be next in line for a CEO position with one of the member banks.â
Ramesh paused for an instant. âThat wonât be a problem.â
âExcellent. It was nice catching up. Iâll be in touch.â
âYes, it was.â
Jacob disconnected the call and slipped his phone in the front pocket of his slacks. Sierra approached wearing a little black dress.
âYou think heâs telling the truth?â Jacob asked.
âI think he was deceptive,â Sierra replied, âbased on the inflection in his voice and the slightly longer pause when answering difficult questions. He may do as you ask, but heâs conflicted.â
Jacob let out a ragged breath. âThatâs what I thought too. Thank you for listening.â
âIt was my pleasure.â
Jacob rubbed the stubble on his chin. âWhat other things can you tell from someoneâs voice?â
Sierra placed her hands on her hips. âEverythingâs a probability, so I canât say anything for certain, but I can often tell if someone is tall or healthy or manly or feminine or truthful or deceptive or contemptuous, among other traits.â
âCan you tell if someone loves another person by their voice when talking to that person?â
âAgain, itâs just a probability, not a certainty.â
âWhat about Rebecca?â Jacob gazed out at the skyline for a beat, then looked back to Sierra. âDo you think she loves me?â
âI havenât listened to your personal phone calls since you asked me not to.â
âBut you did listen to them before. What did you think then?â
Sierra reached out and took Jacobâs hand in both of hers. âShe had contempt in her voice. That doesnât signify love in my opinion. Iâm sorry, but contempt is the number one characteristic that determines divorce. I detected contempt in your voice too.â
Jacob frowned at that. âWhat about when Iâm talking to you?â
âI donât detect contempt.â
Jacob leaned in, their lips almost touching. âWhat about love?â
She forced a smile. âYou still view me as a possession.â
